High Desert 1st-Cut Timothy Hay — 4 lb Box for Small Pets
Product description
Premium Timothy Grass: Grown and harvested locally in Northern Nevada, this product is 1st-cut timothy hay presented in a 4 lb box. The hay is composed entirely of timothy grass—no additives, preservatives, or flavorings—so pets receive straight forage.
Nutritional Profile: Formulated to support digestion and dental health, the guaranteed analysis reads: Crude Protein (Min) 6%, Crude Fat (Min) 1%, Crude Fiber (Max) 35%, Moisture (Max) 12%. The long, fibrous strands are ideal for promoting natural chewing and consistent tooth wear.
Packaging and Handling: Each batch is hand-packed into breathable cartons rather than sealed plastic, helping preserve the hay’s structure and grassy scent while allowing air circulation. The packaging is suitable for placement in hay feeders or for free-access grazing.
Intended Use and Versatility: Best fed daily as part of a small pet’s regular diet. Recommended for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, ferrets, and other small herbivores across life stages. It can be offered alone or blended with orchard grass or meadow mixes to vary texture and encourage foraging.
Feeding Notes: The first-cut harvest yields longer, sturdier stalks that encourage steady chewing and activity. Owners often use this hay for routine feeding, enrichment, and to keep pets engaged through natural grazing behaviors.
Care and Storage: Store in a cool, dry place to maintain freshness and prevent mold. Because the hay is not treated with preservatives and is boxed with air flow in mind, keep the carton closed between uses and check for dust or brittle pieces when introducing new batches.
Pros
- High-fiber forage to support digestion
- All-natural, no additives or preservatives
- Long, sturdy stems that encourage chewing
Cons
- Some batches may include dry or stiff stalks
- Boxed in breathable cartons with no inner plastic
- Occasional lack of soft leaf tops for picky eaters
VerdictA solid all-natural timothy hay option for small pets that need high fiber and long stems for chewing. Hand-packed and shipped in vented boxes to preserve texture and aroma. Quality can vary by batch — many small pet owners report enthusiastic acceptance, while a few note some dry or stiff stems.

Both rabbits give it a thumbs up
We tested several hays and both of our bunnies happily chow down on this timothy. It’s become an easy everyday option to keep on hand and they both nibble it right away.

Top pick for my rescue buns
I keep coming back to High Desert for my rescue rabbits. New bunny dove into the box immediately. Long, healthy stalks with a fresh scent—far better than generic brands.

Picky bun approved
My picky rabbit devours this hay and won’t touch many supermarket options. Quality is good and fast delivery was a bonus.

This is very dry & seems old- spent a-lot of money& my two buns won’t touch it. 1/5
Disappointed with freshness
This batch was very dry and brittle and our rabbits refused to eat it. Had to buy a replacement shortly after because it didn’t last.

Okay but not a favorite
Most of the batch looks good—long green stems—but there are some brown bits and leaf dust. My rabbit eats other brands more readily at a similar cost.

Well packed but a bit dry
Box arrived full. Hay is firm and somewhat dry, so I mix it with alfalfa. My guinea pig seems to enjoy it, though some twiggy pieces go untouched.

Guinea pigs go wild for it
Very green and full box. Note: hay sits loose in the carton to let it breathe. My pigs dig, burrow, and snack nonstop—this is their favorite for texture and the seedheads.
