Waterproof Handheld VHF Marine Radio (Submersible, 1/2.5/5W)
Product description
Fully waterproof to JIS8/IPX8 standards, this handheld VHF is designed to withstand heavy spray, brief submersion and regular wet use. The casing is rugged and compact for one‑hand operation and the unit is engineered to survive up to 30 minutes submerged at a depth of five feet. The housing includes rubber-sealed controls and a reinforced connector area to maintain a watertight seal.
The transmitter offers selectable output: 1 watt for short-range, 2.5 watts for moderate distance, and 5 watts when you need the extra reach. That choice helps conserve battery life during everyday use while providing higher power when you’re farther from other stations. The receiver covers all USA, International, and Canadian marine channels so you can listen to local marine traffic and international communications as needed.
Preprogrammed NOAA weather channels and an Emergency/Weather Alert function let the radio act as a dedicated weather receiver. When alerts are active, the radio sounds an attention tone and automatically plays the emergency broadcast so you receive important warnings immediately.
Multi-channel monitoring features include an instant access key for Channel 16 and a watch mode that checks channels 16 and 9 while you remain on your selected channel. The unit polls the emergency channels at short intervals so you won’t miss urgent calls while engaged on another frequency.
Accessories supplied with the radio include a rapid clip-on DC charger for vehicle-style 12 V sockets, a Lithium‑Ion rechargeable battery pack for extended runtime, a flexible SMA rubber antenna, and a sturdy belt clip for hands-free carry. The antenna attaches via a standard SMA connector and the battery slides into a sealed compartment with a positive-lock clip.
Compact and well built, the radio is intended for everyday marine use — from kayaks and tenders to larger boats as a backup handheld. Many users add a small flotation aid to the wrist strap or belt clip for extra retrieval assurance if it goes overboard.
Pros
- Full JIS8/IPX8 waterproof rating and submersible
- Selectable 1 / 2.5 / 5 W transmit power
- NOAA weather channels with automatic alert
Cons
- Charger is a 12 V clip-on design only
- Does not reliably float without added aid
- Handheld range can't match fixed 25 W radios
VerdictA durable, feature-rich handheld VHF made for boating, kayaking, and offshore work. It pairs true submersibility and a float-friendly build with flexible transmit power and full channel coverage, plus NOAA weather alerts and multi-channel monitoring. Great for a reliable backup radio or primary handheld on small craft, though users should verify charging options and floating aids for added securit

Charger format was unexpected
Would prefer a standard wall plug; I had to purchase a separate adapter to charge it at home.

Dependable for years
I've relied on this radio for a decade and it still performs well. Only drawback is the charger style — a USB charging option would be more convenient at home.

Durability concern after submersion
Quality felt good initially, but mine stopped working after roughly 20 minutes underwater.

Received a defective unit
Appearance and build seem fine, but the belt clip kept popping off and it only worked about six weeks. Charger is vehicle-only and using an adapter at home was inconvenient. Disappointed with the experience.

One of the better handhelds I've used
Good design and solid performance — a better choice than some other compact radios I've tried.

Five years and still going
Used while kayaking and survived a few swims; recently charger stopped working. I opened the charger and fixed a recessed contact pin in minutes — an easy repair that got it charging again.

Had failures but warranty support helped
My unit went unresponsive after many rough trips. Customer service arranged a warranty replacement quickly and the refurbished unit arrived in better condition. The replacement later failed after heavy use, though.

Solid build but limited range expectations
Well made and the scan/weather features are handy. Don't expect boat-mounted 25 W range — it’s good for lakes and nearby coast, but you may need elevation to extend reach.

Loaded with useful marine features
Waterproof and built tough, but it won't float on its own — add a small foam float to the wrist strap. Transmission is clear and you can switch to 5 W when needed. The channel monitoring lets you keep an ear on emergency and calling channels while using another frequency.

Excellent performer for professionals
As a working mariner I use a handheld as backup and for small boats. This unit outperforms my older model in range and battery life; lithium battery lasts all day and the controls are intuitive and light in the pack.

Great hardware, limited marine use so far
Feels solid and well laid out with a bright, easy display. Controls and keypad are comfortable and responsive. I haven’t had much chance to use the marine bands where I live, but the weather receiver works very well.
