Aadi Perukku, also called Padinettam Perukku, is a vibrant Tamil festival observed on the 18th day of the month of Aadi. It celebrates water, fertility and abundance, and is especially meaningful for farmers, newlyweds and women praying for prosperity and well-being.

Honoring Water and Abundance: The Heart of Aadi Perukku

The festival aligns with the monsoon rise of rivers, particularly the Cauvery. Families gather on riverbanks to offer prayers, light lamps and float mango leaves tied with turmeric as symbols of renewal and good fortune. These rituals express gratitude for the life-giving waters and seek continued bounty for the season ahead.

Sumangali Pooja and Women’s Rituals

  • Sumangali Pooja: Married women exchange turmeric, betel leaves, bangles and mangalsutras to invoke blessings for marital harmony and longevity.
  • Young girls’ prayers: Girls tie yellow threads on their wrists and pray for a happy marriage and prosperous life.
  • Hospitality for newlyweds: In many communities, newly married women are invited to their in-laws’ homes, gifted clothes or jewelry, and sometimes a gold coin is added to the bride’s thali (mangalsutra) as a blessing.

Kalandha Sadham – The Festive Feast

  • Kalandha Sadham refers to mixed rice feasts prepared for the celebration, combining several rice varieties such as lemon rice, coconut rice, tamarind rice, curd rice and sweet pongal.
  • These dishes are first offered to the Goddess and then enjoyed during riverside picnics with family and friends, making the meal both devotional and communal.
