Let’s keep things simple. Even though these sparkling chocolate cookie truffles are shown on a Christmas plate, they work any time of year. I’m sharing this recipe right after the holidays because they’re too cute and easy not to enjoy whenever you want a quick, crowd-pleasing dessert.

What are chocolate cookie truffles?

Sometimes called Oreo truffles, these treats are made from chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos), cream cheese, and a candy coating or melted chocolate. They’re no-bake, easy to customize, and great for seasonal baking or anytime you need a fast sweet bite.

You can use candy melts, almond bark, or tempered chocolate in white, semi-sweet, or dark varieties to coat the truffles. After dipping, decorate however you like—sprinkles, sanding sugar, or a drizzle of contrasting chocolate all work well.

The inspiration behind the sparkling chocolate cookie truffles

These truffles were inspired by the delight of an early snowfall. My daughter was thrilled by the snow and eager for mini snowball fights, and I wanted to echo that joy in something sweet. The sparkling white sanding sugar on the truffles mimics little snowballs—cute and seasonal without being tied to a specific holiday.

I originally considered cone shapes with sprinkles to look like tiny Christmas trees, but the snowball idea felt right for a general winter treat. Swap chocolate colors and sprinkles to adapt the look for any season.

Can I ship cookie truffles?

Because these truffles contain cream cheese, they’re best kept refrigerated and are not suitable for shipping. Store them in an airtight container in the fridge; they’ll keep well for about one to two weeks.

A few recipe notes

Here are some tips to help you make the best truffles:

  • Use classic chocolate sandwich cookies for the ideal filling-to-cookie ratio. Cookies with extra filling make the mixture too soft to roll.
  • If you plan to color chocolate, use candy coloring formulated for chocolate—oil-based colors labeled “safe for chocolate” or “candy coloring.” Water-based food coloring will seize chocolate and ruin the coating.
  • If you want a vegan version, use non-dairy cream cheese and a dairy-free coating. Oreos are typically vegan, but check other brands’ ingredients. Vegan candy coatings are harder to find; tempering vegan white chocolate is an alternative if needed.
  • For sparkle, use fine sanding sugar from the cake-decorating section. Smaller sprinkles work better if you plan heavy decoration, but choose whatever looks best for your event.
  • Make sure the cream cheese is softened before mixing. Let it sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes, or microwave the unwrapped block for 15 seconds on high to soften slightly if needed.
  • A food processor streamlines the process: pulse the cookies into crumbs, add cream cheese, and blend to a dough. If you don’t have a processor, place cookies in a sturdy plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin, then mix with a spoon or stand mixer.

Sparkling Chocolate Cookie Truffles (aka – Oreo Truffles)

Yield:
about 40 1-inch truffles
Prep Time:
20 minutes
Chilling Time:
30 minutes
Total Time:
50 minutes

Grab a package of your favorite chocolate sandwich cookie, plus 3 more ingredients, and you’ll have a beautiful batch of sparkling chocolate cookie truffles in no time.

Ingredients

  • 1 14-ounce package chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos)
  • 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 pound candy coating wafers or tempered chocolate
  • Fine white sanding sugar or sprinkles for coating

Instructions

  1. Crush the cookies to fine crumbs in a food processor. If you don’t have one, place cookies in a freezer-weight plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin.
  2. Cut softened cream cheese into cubes and add to the processor. Pulse until the mixture forms a uniform dough, scraping the bowl as needed. You can also mix by hand or with a stand mixer.
  3. Cover and refrigerate the dough for about 30 minutes until firm enough to scoop and roll.
  4. Use a small cookie scoop (tablespoon size) to portion about 40 truffles. Place on wax-paper–lined baking sheets. Keep them chilled if your kitchen is warm.
  5. Melt the candy coating following package directions (microwave or double boiler), or temper chocolate if you prefer.
  6. Dip each truffle in the melted coating, return to wax paper to set, and sprinkle with sanding sugar while the coating is wet to create the sparkle.
  7. Once the coating is set, store truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1–2 weeks. Enjoy!

Notes

  • This recipe requires about 36 cookies; a standard 14-ounce package usually yields between 33–37 cookies depending on the brand.
  • You may use non-dairy cream cheese for a vegan version, and check coating options if you need a dairy-free candy coating.
  • Truffles must be refrigerated after the coating sets. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 10 days.
