Blueberry Protein Smoothie Recipe

Now that the cold, dreary weather is behind us, I’m back to making smoothies every morning. I can never get into them in the winter—I crave warm comfort foods like eggs, toast, and oatmeal. But with sunnier mornings and warmer temperatures, my morning smoothie routine is back in full swing. Sometimes I make smoothie bowls, but most days a quick blended drink is perfect to get me going.

Blueberry Protein Smoothie - perfect to power-up your day!

This Blueberry Protein Smoothie is a slight adaptation of a recipe from The Daniel Plan. I adjusted the ingredients to match what I had on hand, but kept the same healthy, satisfying idea: antioxidants, greens, healthy fats, and protein all in one glass. It’s easy to prepare, tastes great, and makes a filling breakfast or post-workout option.

What makes this smoothie so good is the balance of nutrients from simple, whole-food ingredients. Below I explain the benefits of each component and how they contribute to energy, recovery, and overall wellness.

Blueberry Protein Smoothie - perfect to power-up your day!

Blueberries – Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients. They help neutralize free radicals, support immune health, and add natural sweetness without excess sugar. Frozen blueberries also contribute to a thick, chilled texture.

Kale – Kale is a nutrient-dense leafy green with iron, vitamin K, and powerful antioxidants. A small handful blends easily into smoothies and provides concentrated vitamins and minerals.

Spinach – Spinach is low in calories but high in vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, vitamin K, magnesium, folate, and iron. It blends smoothly and is virtually undetectable in flavor, making it a great way to boost a smoothie’s nutritional profile.

Walnuts – Walnuts add heart-healthy fats and texture. They’re an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fats that support brain and heart health.

Banana – Banana gives natural sweetness, body, and creaminess. It also supplies potassium and carbohydrates for quick energy and aids digestion with fiber.

Coconut oil – A tablespoon of coconut oil provides medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that some people use for quick energy. It also contributes a silky mouthfeel and supports nutrient absorption for fat-soluble vitamins.

Chia/Flax blend – A combination of chia and milled flax seeds adds omega-3s, fiber, and plant-based protein. These seeds help with satiety, support digestive health, and contribute micronutrients like calcium and magnesium.

Almond butter – Almond butter supplies healthy monounsaturated fats, additional protein, and a subtly nutty flavor. It helps make the smoothie more satisfying and balanced.

This smoothie is versatile—swap almond milk for another plant milk, replace walnuts with another nut if you prefer, or omit the coconut oil if you want fewer calories. The key is balancing fruit, greens, healthy fats, and a source of plant-based protein or nut butter to keep you full and focused through the morning.
