Anyone who knows me knows I’m obsessed with pizza. The tang of pepperoni, the gooey cheese, and the crunchy crust—often cheekily dipped in a little garlic mayo—are irresistible. So when Pizza Hut Restaurants told me they had a new recipe for their gluten-free pizza bases and invited me to try them, I jumped at the chance.
I remember when Pizza Hut Restaurants first introduced gluten-free bases. I called Steve excitedly the day it launched—they were the first major chain in my area to offer them—and insisted we go straight away for dinner. Before that, I hadn’t been to a Pizza Hut since my A-level days, when I watched friends devour slices while I sipped a Coca-Cola.
To be honest, I wasn’t very impressed the first time I tried their gluten-free pizzas, but that has changed. These new bases are genuinely good.
I received a voucher from Pizza Hut when I was feeling under the weather, so we ordered takeout. There’s something unbeatable about eating pizza in your pyjamas. I chose a meat feast, piled with extra pepperoni (obviously) and an indulgent double helping of cheese. I usually try to avoid dairy, but some nights you just need proper comfort food.
Pizza Hut’s gluten-free pizzas are square-shaped, which sets them apart from other chains like Domino’s or Pizza Express. I’m not always keen on gluten-free foods looking different; often I just want my meal to blend in with everyone else’s when I’m eating out. Still, the square shape does make it easy to spot which pizza is gluten-free right away.
One drawback remains: Pizza Hut currently offers only one size for the gluten-free base. This is a major gripe for me. Being gluten-free doesn’t mean I want a smaller portion—I want to enjoy a large pizza too. But putting that complaint aside, I focused on the pizza in hand.
The quality of the new gluten-free base impressed me. There was a generous amount of toppings, which is always welcome, and the base itself was noticeably improved from the previous version. It had that floppy, bendable slice I love, where the tip droops under the weight of cheese and spicy meats, while the crusts stayed delightfully crunchy and perfect for dipping.
I honestly didn’t expect to become a regular Pizza Hut customer, but after this experience I’d probably choose them over Domino’s. The gluten-free bases felt higher quality and were less greasy overall than some alternatives. This is a noticeable improvement, and I’d recommend Pizza Hut to anyone with coeliac disease looking for a decent slice. Now if only Pizza Hut would offer a large gluten-free pizza—how amazing would that be?
*I was sent a voucher to review the new Pizza Hut Restaurant bases. This did not influence my honest review as a dedicated gluten-free pizza eater.
