I adore Crumbl Cookies, but the price can add up fast — one cookie can cost several dollars. That inspired me to create a copycat version of one of my favorites: the Dirt Cake cookie. This homemade recipe captures the same soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture and chocolate-forward flavor without the high price tag.

This copycat is ideal if you don’t have a Crumbl nearby or if you simply want plenty of cookies to enjoy at home. Expect pillowy cookies made with Dutch cocoa, finished with a velvety chocolate frosting (made with semi-sweet chips) and a generous sprinkle of crushed Oreo crumbs. What Are Crumbl Cookies?

Crumbl Cookies is a bakery franchise known for its rotating menu of soft, cake-like cookies. They offer many flavors — from classic sugar and snickerdoodle to seasonal and novelty varieties like waffle, banana bread, fruity cereal, and the Dirt Cake cookie. Their weekly rotation keeps fans coming back to try new and returning favorites.

Where Can I Find Crumbl Cookie Shops

Crumbl has hundreds of locations across the United States and continues to expand. If you’re curious whether there’s a shop near you, check their official store listings. Even if a location is far, this recipe makes it easy to enjoy a similar cookie at home.

What makes Crumbl cookies special is their unique texture: a slightly crisp iced top and an ultra-soft, moist interior that almost melts on your tongue. That tender, cake-like crumb combined with bold flavors is what keeps people hooked.

Are Crumbl Cookies Worth It?

If you love cake-like, indulgent cookies, yes — they’re worth trying. They’re rich and satisfying, though the price and availability may not fit every baker’s routine. Making a copycat at home is a great way to enjoy that experience more often.

You’ll need standard baking tools: a baking sheet, parchment paper, a large mixing bowl, a hand or stand mixer, and a 2-inch cookie scoop for portioning the dough. For the frosting and Oreo topping, have a few medium bowls, a piping bag and tip (or a zip-top bag with a corner snipped), and a microwave-safe bowl for melting chocolate.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and mix until combined.
  3. Add the salt, baking soda, and Dutch cocoa powder; mix until incorporated.
  4. Gradually add the all-purpose flour and mix until a soft dough forms, scraping the bowl as needed to ensure even mixing.
  5. Using a 2-inch cookie scoop, portion the dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space for gentle spread.

  5. Once the cookies are completely cool, pipe or spread the frosting onto each cookie. Top with crushed Oreo crumbs.

How to Store Chocolate Cake Cookies

Store the finished cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week for best freshness. If your kitchen is warm, refrigerate the cookies; bring them to room temperature before serving for the best texture.

Chocolate Dirt Cookies FAQs

Do I have to use Dutch cocoa powder in the cookies?

No. If you prefer a vanilla-forward cookie, omit the cocoa powder. The dough will yield a lighter, non-chocolate cookie that’s still soft and delicious.

Can I use gluten-free flour?

Yes, you can substitute a gluten-free flour blend, but the texture will differ slightly. You may also want to add a bit of baking powder if your blend doesn’t contain leavening.

How long does it take for the chocolate frosting to set?

Frosting usually firms up within an hour at room temperature. To speed this up, chill the cookies briefly in the fridge; allow about 20–30 minutes after refrigeration before serving so the chocolate isn’t too cold.

How many cookies should I bake per sheet?

Bake 4–6 cookies per sheet to allow room for even spreading. Crowding the pan can prevent proper rise and texture.
