These little gnomes are a fast, fun way to add festive charm to a shelf, mantel, or table during October.

Why I Like This Project

  • Quick project. Each gnome takes under 10 minutes to assemble.
  • No-sew. No stitching required—minimal supplies and any adult crew sock works well.
  • Printable template. A beard cutting template is provided so you can cut the felt beard quickly and accurately.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Use mismatched socks. This project is perfect for mismatched pairs. Look for patterned socks at discount stores or reuse ones you already have. Use a crew sock for the hat—the banded edge creates a neat finished look. For a very long, droopy hat, use a knee-high sock.
  2. Save leftovers. Cutting the hat sock leaves a foot portion—save it to make another gnome later or create extras as gifts.
  3. Use felt for the beard. Felt is inexpensive, easy to cut, and accessible. One sheet yields multiple beards and is simpler than working with faux fur.

Supplies

two socks, scissors, bead, stuffing, rice, scissors
  • One solid adult crew or ankle sock: for the body.
  • One adult crew sock: for the hat.
  • Rice: or dry beans to add weight so the gnome stands easily. Use a jar to pour rice into the sock for less mess.
  • Pillow stuffing (polyfil): a few handfuls to top the rice and create the rounded body. You can also use scrap fabric or cotton balls.
  • Hair ties or rubber bands: to secure sock openings.
  • Wood bead or half bead: a small wooden or half bead (or pom pom) for the nose.
  • Felt: for the beard—affordable and easy to work with.
  • Printable beard pattern: use a cutting template for consistent beards.
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue and hot glue gun

How To Make A Pointy Gnome Hat

Step 1: To make a tall, pointy hat, insert a pencil into the gnome body so it extends a few inches above the stuffing. Add a touch of hot glue around the pencil to hold it if desired.

Step 2: Slide the hat over the pencil and shape the top to be pointy, resting against the pencil tip.

How To Make a Floppy Gnome Hat

Step 1: For a floppy hat, slide the hat piece onto the gnome and secure it with hot glue. Optionally glue a pom pom to the hat tip.

Note: Floppy hats work best with standard socks rather than thick fleece or fuzzy socks.

How To Add The Finishing Touches

No Sew Sock Gnome FAQs

What can I use to make the gnome’s beard?

Faux fur looks great, but white felt is my preferred choice because it’s inexpensive, easy to cut, and holds glue well.

What socks work best for sock gnomes?

Adult crew socks work best because of their size. You can use an ankle sock for the body if needed, but use a crew sock for the hat for the finished edge band.
